Happy World Vegan Day from all of us at Cork Vegans!
Every year on 1 November, vegans around the world take a day to celebrate. Here in Cork we want to acknowledge this day with our community, and what a beautiful day it is to get out to enjoy some plant based brunch at My Goodness or another great vegan friendly business from our Cork Vegan Food Map!
World Vegan Day started in 1994, marking 50 years since the word “vegan” was first coined. Thirty-odd years on, look how far things have come. Not long ago, going vegan in Cork meant a lot of chips and a lot of explaining. Now you can get a proper vegan breakfast before work, pick up something tasty in the English Market, and finish the evening with a pizza or a pint and plenty of company.
A city that’s come a long way
Cork has always had a strong food culture. We’re the food capital, as any Corkonian will tell you without being asked. It’s been brilliant to watch our cafés, bakeries and restaurants lean into plant-based food with real skill. A big thank you to every local business that has added a vegan option, labelled things clearly or just made us feel welcome - it makes a real difference.
It’s the people that make it
What we love most about Cork Vegans is the community. The chats at our monthly socials, the dish everyone wants the recipe for at the potluck, the walks along the Marina, climbing nights, sanctuary trips and the work of our activist communities. Some of us have been vegan for decades. Some of us started last week. Everyone is welcome, and nobody has to have it all figured out.
If you’re vegan-curious, today is a great day to try some delicious vegan food. Try one new meal, swap the milk in your tea, or make plans to come along and meet a few of us. No pressure, no judgement, just good food and good craic.
